2015 Year 5 and 6 - Junior Netball:
* The playing format for Years 5 – 8 is currently under review and any changes will be phased in from 2016.
Future Ferns netball is for children in years 5-6. Teams play the traditional form of the game
(7 v 7) on Saturday mornings. Players register in teams through their school, and schools provide uniforms and balls. Games to be played each Saturday at the netball Courts attached to the Recreation Centre Wharf Road Motueka on a Saturday morning. All teams/school will have their own practise times. Future Fern games will be managed from the office by the buzzer to signal the beginning and the end of the quarter.
Games will be 8 minute quarters with a 2 minute quarter time and 5 minute half time. At half time teams will be rotated in positions by the coach with the help of the umpire on the court. Coaches please make substitutions at quarter times only. Teams can do paper scissors rock to figure out who will have the Centre pass at the beginning
All team coaches must document the player position for each game during the season to ensure an even rotation and experience in all positions is achieved. Master sheet provided by the Centre.
Scores will be taken for Future Fern games to acknowledge the work done by the team.
Netball continues to be modified for this age group but there is the first introduction of 7 v 7 game play. The focus is on player rotation to prevent early specialisation of positions. Players are continuing to develop both physically, technically and socially so it is important to give them the opportunity to play a wide range of positions on the court, regardless of their physical attributes. Players should have lots of touches of the ball and be actively involved to best develop their skills.
Phase 2 of the Junior Netball Review is currently underway. NNZ wants to provide a progressive player pathway that not only develops the player and provides enjoyment but also creates a lifelong love of the game. If you have any thoughts or suggestions on possible changes or must haves, please email Nicola Jones nicolaj@netballnz.co.nz. Changes will be piloted in the 2015 season and rolled out in the 2016 season.

Relax the 3 second rule. Players are encouraged to pass or shoot within six seconds. This allows players time to gain their balance and make decisions – which takes longer at this level.
Relax the replayed ball rule – particularly in wet, cold weather.
Footwork
Relax the footwork rule; allow players to gain balance, not progress down the court.
Obstruction
Enforce the obstruction rule to allow players to get their passes away to promote the flowing game. Defending players must retreat 1m.
Contact
Enforce the contact rule. A player may not push, trip, knock, bump or hold an opponent, either deliberately or accidentally.
Rotations
Players at this stage of development need to develop basic movement, passing, attack and defensive skills. Position specific training is not necessary at this stage.
Rotations may seem confusing for the first few weeks, but are critical to the Netball players development and enjoyment. It allows players to develop knowledge and skills in all playing positions/areas of court.
SAMPLE OF PLAYER ROTATIONS
Where a team has more than 7 players, a good place to make the substitution is a
